Health problems
-
Weight increase due to lack of exercise.
-
Possibility of eye strain, as the act of staring at the same point of focus for long periods of time can strain the eye muscles.
-
Repetitive Strain Injury and/or back problems due to poor posture and badly set up work station.
-
Irritability and insomnia brought about by drinking to much caffeine rich beverages whilst staying up on line.
As with any addiction, the first step is to recognise that you do have a problem, then you need to ask yourself ‘Why am I escaping from the real world?’ It may be that if you can resolve this question your internet use will drop to ‘normal’ levels.
Another strategy is to monitor your use of the internet, keep a record of the time you log on, why you logged on, where you go and what time you logged off. You must be truthful with yourself, no cheating. The absolute minimum for keeping records would be a week, longer would be better.
From this data, a pattern should emerge and you can plan a strategy to begin reducing the time spent at your computer. Look for other interests that can be done without going on line. Instead of emailing, phone your friends or go and visit them. Instead of playing games all night set yourself a limit and stick to it. You can use the kitchen timer to remind you to stop. If you still feed the need for playing games play chess or checkers with your partner, children or neighbours. Invite some friends over for a Monopoly, Rummy or whatever session. Re-discover the joys of the big screen by going to the movies.
